IDAHO BOARD OF SOCIAL WORK EXAMINERS

Licensure Application Process

Idaho law requires the licensure of all persons who practice or offer to practice as a social worker in the State of Idaho. Licensure is available through both endorsement and examination, and is issued for Bachelor Social Work, Master Social Work, and Clinical Social Work.  Applicants pre-approved by the Board may schedule their examination in any approved test site.

All applicants for Social Work licensure under the  Licensing Act must meet the minimum qualifications set forth below:

  • Each applicant must be of good moral character. "Good moral character" is defined by the board as that behavior exhibited on the part of an applicant which is in conformity with the Social Work Code of Professional Conduct and within the limits of state law.

  • Each applicant must submit a complete Application for Licensure to the Board on the forms provided by the Bureau of Occupational Licenses.

  • Each applicant must meet the educational requirements. Educational requirements must be verified by submission of official transcripts from the educational institution directly to the Bureau of Occupational Licenses.

    • Each applicant must successfully pass the appropriate level of the ASWB examination.

Certain levels of licensure may also require supervised practical experience.

The practice of Social Work and the areas of required knowledge for each level of licensure, as well as the supervised experience requirements are defined under Rule 201.
