Every person holding an Idaho license as a Professional Counselor, Clinical Professional Counselor, Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, or a Marriage and Family Therapist must complete in each twelve-month period preceding the renewal of a license, twenty (20) contact hours of continuing education. A contact hour is one (1) hour of actual participation in a continuing education activity, exclusive of breaks.
The Idaho Legislature recently approved new rules for the Idaho Licensing Board of Professional Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists. Highlights of Rule 425, which governs continuing education, include
(a) no more than ten (10) contact hours may be obtained through self-study or on-line courses during each reporting period, and
(b) Ethics contact hours must be obtained in a face-to-face setting where you can interact with the instructor and students. ***At the October 29, 2012 Board meeting, the Board reviewed Rule 425.01 in regard to ethics continuing education and determined that ethics may be obtained through an approved webinar as long as it is in “live time” and a person can “interact” with the instructor and participants. It must meet those components in order to qualify for the ethics continuing education.
For more specifics regarding continuing education please review Rule 425
The rules do not require that all continuing education courses that you attend be pre-approved by the Board. It requires “The contact hours of continuing education must be obtained in areas of study germane to the practice for which the license is issued as approved by the Board.” (425.01) Presentations germane to your practice are usually acceptable to the Board. Offerings in association with or under the auspices of providers listed below as “approved by the Board” are acceptable, without question. If you are reluctant to take a class from a presenter not on this pre-approved list you might approach the presenter and ask if he has sought or is willing to pursue pre-approval. Pre-approval eliminates any question of the course be acceptable for your continuing education requirement.
CE providers may obtain Board approval by submitting a completed Continuing Education Approval Form
