Licensure Application Process

Idaho law requires the licensure of all persons who practice or offer to practice as a mortician or funeral director in the State of Idaho. Licensure is available through both endorsement and examination. The Board registers trainees, and licenses Funeral Directors and Morticians. The Board also issues Certificates of Authority to allow the sale of pre-arranged service contracts.

RESIDENT TRAINEE APPLICATION CHECK LIST 

For the Resident Trainee permit the following are required: 

            ______  1.  A completed application, passport style photo, and fees. 

            ______  2.  Applicant must be a resident of Idaho.  

______  3.  An Idaho licensed Mortician must be the supervisor in an Idaho licensed Funeral Establishment. 

            ______  4.  Proof of graduation from high school or a GED. 

______  5.  At the end of the resident trainee period, a Resident Trainee Final Report must be filed by the supervising mortician. 

Resident Trainee permits can only be held for two years to gain the one year of experience required.  

______  6.  Must proceed to qualify as a licensee within the following three-year                                                                         period or show the Board a good reason for further delay. 

NOTE:  Any interruption in the training of 60 days or more constitutes termination of training. 

 

MORTICIAN LICENSE APPLICATION CHECK LIST 

For the Mortician license the following are required: 

            ______  1.  A completed application, passport style photo, and fees. 

______  2.  A Resident Trainee Final Report signed by the Supervisor on file showing that you have assisted in 25 embalmings and have done 25 embalmings and assisted in 25 funeral arrangements and have done 25 funerals. 

______  3.  An official transcript showing 60 semester credits from an accredited college or university.  (45 of the credits must be in liberal arts, business, or science). 

______  4.  An official transcript showing completion of a course of at least one year in an embalming school accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education, Inc.  

______  5.  Official score reports from the Conference of Funeral Service Examiners on the Arts and Sciences portions of the National Examination.  

______  6.  Once the above has been approved by the Mortician Board, a State Examination covering the Laws and Rules of the State of Idaho must be successfully completed.

 

FUNERAL DIRECTOR LICENSE APPLICATION CHECK LIST 

For the Funeral Director’s license the following are required: 

            ______  1.  A completed application, passport style photo, and fees. 

______  2.  A Resident Trainee Final Report signed by the Supervisor on file showing that you have assisted in 25 funeral arrangements and have done 25 funerals.  

______  3.  An official transcript showing 60 semester credits from an accredited college or university.  (45 of the credits must be in liberal arts, business, or science) 

______  4.  An official transcript showing at least 15 semester credit hours or the equivalent from an accredited funeral director program in courses of study including:

                        a.  business law

                        b.  psychology

                        c.  sociology

                        d.  funeral service counseling

                        e.  funeral service management

                        f.  other classes that relate to conducting funeral business.  

______  5.  Official Score report of passing the Idaho State Based Examination from the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Board. (See NOTE) 

              6.  Upon receipt of all the above, the Board must approve the application and the Idaho State Law examination must be passed.

 

NOTE:  All materials and supporting documentation must be on file with the Bureau before you are approved to sit for the Idaho State Based Examination.  You must send a request letter for the Idaho State Based Examination to the Bureau of Occupational Licenses before you contact the Conference to sit for the examination. The Conference must receive approval from the Board before you are allowed to sit for the State Based Examination.

 

ENDORSEMENT FOR EITHER MORTICIAN OR FUNERAL DIRECTOR 

For an endorsement application for Mortician license or Funeral Director license the following are required if the applicant has a current, valid license in another state with requirements similar to Idaho: 

            ______  1.  A completed application, passport style photo, and fees. 

            ______  2.  Certification from the home state showing status of licensure. 

______  3.  Certification of having passed the appropriate examination/s given by the International Conference of Funeral Service Examiners Board. 

______  4.  Upon review and acceptance of the above requirements by the Mortician Board, an Idaho State Law examination must be successfully completed. 

For either a Mortician license or a Funeral Director license for a person holing a current, valid license in a state with requirements significantly lower than Idaho but has five consecutive years of experience the following are required: 

            ______  1.  A completed  application, passport style photo, and fees. 

            ______  2.  Certification of licensure from the home state. 

______  3.  Certification of having passed the appropriate examination/s given by the International Conference of Funeral Service Examiners Board. 

______  4.  Upon review and acceptance from the Mortician Board of the above requirements, passing the Idaho State Law examination. 

 

The Board also licenses Funeral Establishments, Crematories, and issues Certificates of Authority to those offering pre-need insurance policies to the public. A facility inspection is required prior to a facility’s original licensure. Inspections of all licensed funeral establishments and crematories are conducted at least annually.

Be advised that an additional $250.00 will be required for all renewals for licenses, permits or certificates that are postmarked after the expiration date.  The reinstatement penalty is in addition to the renewal fee.
