Training & Application Process

Idaho law requires all persons seeking licensure to provide documented proof of meeting the training requirements. The training requirements necessary to obtain a license to practice cosmetology, nail technology, esthetics, or electrology in the State of Idaho are outlined below. (If you are licensed in another state, please return to the Licensure Application Process.)

NOTE

Original Training and Graduation Records must be submitted DIRECTLY from the school to the Bureau. The Bureau WILL NOT accept these records from the student/applicant.

Schools are required to register all students with the Board within 5 days of beginning training. The Board WILL NOT certify training hours obtained outside of this requirement. Students should insure they are properly registered by obtaining written confirmation of their registration from the school.

Licensure Requirements

All categories of licensure require the applicant to:

Be no less than sixteen and one-half (16 1/2) years of age
Have completed at least two (2) years of high school education or its equivalent.
Successfully pass the appropriate examinations.

Cosmetology:

Completion and graduation from 2,000 hour course of instruction from a school of cosmetology, or a 4,000 hour course of instruction as an apprentice.

Nail Technology:

Completion and graduation from 400 hour course of instruction from a school of cosmetology, or a 800 hour course of instruction as an apprentice.

Haircutter:

Completion and graduation from 900 hour course of instruction from a school of cosmetology.

Esthetics:

Completion and graduation from 600 hour course of instruction from a school of cosmetology, or a 1,200 hour course of instruction as an apprentice.

Electrology:

Completion and graduation from 800 hour course of instruction from a school of cosmetology, or a 1,600 hour course of instruction as an apprentice.

Schools offering training are required to register all students with the Board within 5 days of beginning training. Salons offering apprentice training are required to register apprentices with the Board. The apprentice must receive an Apprentice Permit prior to beginning training.

School personnel may obtain and download a current student roster of all students registered with the Board.

You may download the applications to register as a Student, or an Apprentice, or request applications from the Bureau office. The application for a permit to train as a Student Instructor in either Cosmetology, Nail Technology, Haircutting, Esthetics, or Electrology is also available.

Permits to temporarily demonstrate or teach cosmetology outside of licensed facilities are also available.
