Examinations

All licensure examinations are administered by D. L. Roope at various locations in the state of Idaho.  Both practical and theory/jurisprudence examinations are administered on exam day.  You may also choose to take written portions of the examination at LaserGrade (see below).

A.D.A. NOTICE

If you have a disability as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, and you require special accommodation, please review the Bureau ADA information page for requesting accommodation, and attach an application for accommodation, and a written request for special accommodation that identifies the specific accommodations that are being requested to meet your special needs.  A request for special accommodation must be accompanied by current & historical medical documentation identifying your disability and supporting the need for the accommodations being requested.

NOTE: Rules that change the application requirements and deadlines have been adopted by the Board.  Students may now make application for the examination before completing their training in a cosmetology school.

1.    The student's application for examination must be postmarked at least 30 days before the examination date.  Be sure the application is completely filled out and the required fees are attached.

2.    The school must send the final record of instruction and the certificate of graduation and insure it is received and date stamped by the Bureau at least 14 days prior to the examination.

Applicants for examination must submit an application that is
1. complete;
2. includes the required fee; and
3. postmarked before the deadline date in order to be scheduled for examination.

Applicants are scheduled for examination based on either the date an application is received by the IBOL, or the date the application is postmarked.  Once your application and fee is approved, you will be sent an Exam Notification Letter advising that you have been approved for examination.   This letter must be presented at the test site to gain entrance.

Examination candidates also have the option of taking the theory examination by computer through LaserGrade Computer Testing.  The theory portion of the exam, including both the NIC written exam and the Idaho jurisprudence (Law and Rule) exam, will be available at testing sites throughout the United States.  This option will be available for those approved for testing by the Board.

NOTE: There is an additional fee for taking the theory exam by computer.  A separate fee (in addition to the fee required by the Board) will be charged by LaserGrade and must be paid directly to them.

Candidates must notify LaserGrade if they wish to take either or both the NIC written and the Idaho jurisprudence exam. These exams are available either together or individually.  If taken individually, LaserGrade will charge an exam fee for each part.

If you wish to take the theory examination by computer, you must contact LaserGrade for an appointment.  A complete list of testing centers may be found at www.lasergrade.com or by calling 1-800-211-2754.

EXAMINATION FAILURE

If you have previously failed all or any part of the examination, you must make application for re-examination.  A complete application must be submitted to the Bureau before you will be allowed to re-examine.  If you are planning to re-examine immediately please submit your completed Application for Re-examination to the Bureau office.  If you are planning to re-take the theory and/or jurisprudence exam through LaserGrade, you must submit your application to the Bureau prior to taking the test and receive an Examination Notification letter before your examination will be valid.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL EXAMINATION CANDIDATES: Be aware of the deadline dates for both the Board and the test administrator (D.L. Roope).  For those anticipating having to take the full examination it may be necessary to submit the application to the Bureau and the Scheduling Request Form to the test company at the same time.
