Licensure Application Process

Idaho law requires the licensure of all persons who practice or offer to practice architecture in the State of Idaho. Licensure is available through both endorsement and examination.

Applicants for examination must register as an Architectural Intern with the Board and complete the Intern Development Program (IDP) before the Board will give approval for the exam. Subsequent to approval, applicants must schedule their own appointments for the computerized examination. The applicable fees must be included with a completed application.

EXAMINATION

A person applying for license by examination must submit satisfactory evidence of the following to the board.

Either:

a.  Graduation from an accredited architectural curriculum in a school or college approved by the board, and

b.  Specific record of an additional three (3) years or more of experience in architectural work of a character, deemed satisfactory by the board, indicating that the applicant is competent to practice architecture.

OR

a.  That the applicant has attained standards, per board rule, of knowledge and skill approximating that attained through graduation from an accredited architectural curriculum, and

b.  Specific record of eight (8) years or more of experience in architectural work of a character, deemed satisfactory by the board, indicating that the applicant is competent to practice architecture.

The board may adopt, by rule, as its own standards for education and experience, the guidelines published by the national council of architectural registration boards.

ENDORSEMENT

Applicants may be licensed by endorsement, if:

a.  The applicant holds a current and valid license issued by another jurisdiction recognized by the board; and

b.  The applicant holds a national council of architectural registration boards certificate; and

c.  The applicant pays the required fees; and

d.  The applicant files an application with the board, containing information satisfactory to the board concerning the applicant.

TEMPORARY PERMIT

A person licensed as an architect in another state, but not licensed in Idaho, may obtain a permit to offer to render services in the state for a period not to exceed six (6) months if:

a.  The applicant holds a current and valid license issued by a licensing authority in another jurisdiction, and

b.  The applicant holds a national council of architectural registration boards certificate; and

c.  The applicant pays the $50 fee.

Persons allowed to offer architectural services under said permit are prohibited from doing more than offering such services or actually rendering architectural services until fully licensed by the board. Violation of this provision constitutes grounds for refusal to issue a license.
